What's in a Dream?

Dreaming is the continuous flow of ideas, images and emotions. Everyone is expected to go through about two hours worth of dreams every night. However, some people believe that their dreams are longer than this.

Theories of the functions of dreams

In the past two centuries, many dream theories have been developed. These theories originate from the belief that dreams are the manifestations from the brain. a psychological phenomenon that occurs during the REM phase of sleep.

The unconscious part of the brain is busy processing memories. The result is a stream of memory stored flowing through the conscious portion of the brain. This is sometimes called the continuous activation theory.

Another theory, known as the stimulus-response theory recognises the dream as a kind of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams embody the desires that cannot be fulfilled in real life.

The threat simulation theory proposes that dreams are used for evolutionary reasons. When you are in the REM phase of sleep, the amygdala(a part of the fight-or-flight section of the brain, triggers similar for a survival situation. This would have offered the evolutionary benefit of preparing the human body for threats circumstances.

The REM stage

The term REM (or rapid eye) movement is an important factor when it's time to rest. As the night draws in where the brain makes most of its resources by re-learning traits it hasn't learned during the daytime. For instance, the male sexifier. During this time, the octavet is at its highest at this point, making it the best time to be with your significant other.

The REM region is also home to many of the top brainwaves in each day, and includes more obscure ones. The most famous REM-bound inhabitants comprise insomniacs and those with depression. Interestingly, a recent study suggests that depression-related people tend to stay asleep more often and for longer lengths of time. This is due to a mix of factors, one of the most obvious being they are an adolescent daughter.

Nightmares

Being a victim of nightmares is a terrifying experience. They usually accompany other unpleasant emotions. They may be present infrequently, or frequently. They could also be triggered by anxiety or trauma. In certain cases they may be due to medical conditions.

The first step towards reducing your nightmares is understanding the way they function. The subject of dreams can be affected by a variety of things, such as emotions of the dreamer as well as the topic of a prior dream, news, and other events within the dreams of the dreamer.

In some cases the dreamer has the ability to actively manipulate the content of a dreams, including the outcomes. It can be done in many ways however, the most common technique is to play a rewritten version of the nightmare before falling asleep.

Latent content

What is the underlying and hidden meanings in dreams is the subject of debate. Freud asserted that the two are inextricably linked. Freud also compared dreams to an Iceberg. There is a part of an iceberg that can be visible above the water and the other is hidden below the surface.

Freud believed there are three aspects to the mind. It is the conscious brain that's at the top of the iceberg, while the unconscious and the latent mind are at the bottom. According to him, the best way to get a glimpse of the unconscious was by way of dreams.

There are two types to dream material: manifest and latent. The latter includes the actual dream content and the significance of it. It is usually the result of memory fragments and a sequence of symbolic events. In theory it's feasible to transform an actual message into latent.

Freud's Axiom

Sigmund Freud's belief about dreaming is that dreams can be described as wish-fulfilling. This implies that everyone are neurotic. In addition, Freud stated that dreams are not realand they're just a replacement for reality.

The dream's content is divided into two different parts: the manifest and latent. The manifest part contains an actual dream content, and the latent one is the hallucinatory aspect which is dream-like. The content that is manifest results from processing information. The latent content are hidden desires and various other forms of hallucination.

There are four methods that obscure the dream. They are displacement, decryption, transference, and disguise. The first one is displacement. This occurs when a person in a dream substitutes elements of his or her dream for the same components in the dream-thoughts. It's due to the weak control of the sleeping brain.
