What's in a Dream?

Having a dream is the combination of thoughts, images and feelings. Each of us is expected to experience around two hours of sleep each night. However, some dreamers perceive their dreams to be more than this.

Theories of the functions of dreams

Over the last two centuries, a myriad of dream theories have been formulated. These theories are based upon the idea that dreams are manifestations associated with the brain. a psychological process that occurs during the REM stage of sleep.

During this period, the unconscious part of the brain is busy processing memory. The result is a data stream from memory storage that is able to flow through the conscious part of our brain. This is sometimes called the continuous activation theory.

Another one, called the stimulus-response theory acknowledges the fact that dreams are a form of wish-fulfillment. This is because dreams embody the desires that cannot be fulfilled in the real world.

The theory of threat simulation suggests that dreams have an evolutionary function. When you are in the REM stage of sleep the amygdalaarea, which is a part of the section known as the fight or flight part of the brain, responds similarly to during a survival threat. This would have brought the evolutionary advantage of preparing the body for potentially dangerous scenarios.

REM stage

REM, which is also known as rapid eye movement is an important factor when it comes time to fall asleep. In this state of twilight when the brain is at its most active, it makes the most of its energy by recalling things it's not learned during its active hours. One example is the sexifier. The Octavet's levels are at their highest in the morning, which is the ideal time for being with your spouse.

The REM Enclave also is host to some of the more notable brainwaves during today, including more mysterious ones. The most well-known people who reside in REM include insomniacs and depressed people. Unsurprisingly, a new study confirms that those suffering from depression tend to stay asleep more often and for longer periods of time. This is due to a variety of reasons, with the most obvious being that they're an adolescent.

Nightmares

To experience nightmares can be frightening experience. They're often associated with other unpleasant feelings. They can happen frequently or more frequently. They can also be caused through anxiety or trauma. In some instances they could be linked to medical conditions.

The first step in controlling your nightmares is understanding the way they function. The subject of a dream can be influenced or influenced by variety of factors including emotions of the dreamer and the subject of the prior dream, current news, as well as other happenings in the person's life.

In some instances, a dreamer can actively manipulate the content of a vision, as well as its outcomes. This can be accomplished in a number of ways, but a common method is to rehearse a rewritten version of the dream prior to going to sleep.

Latent content

It is not clear if there are evident and latent contents in dreams is a matter of debate. Freud argued that the two are interconnected. He also said that dreams are an Iceberg. There's part of the Iceberg that may be seen above water, and the rest is hidden beneath the surface.

Freud believed there were three parts in the mind. Minds that are conscious constitute at the top of the iceberg while the unconscious and the latent mind are at the lowest. It was believed by him that the most effective method to see the unconscious was through dreams.

There are two kinds of dreams' content: latent and manifest. The latter category includes the actual content of dreams along with the meaning behind it. It is usually a combination of memory fragments as well as a series of symbolic events. In theory, the possibility exists to transform this manifest information into latent.

Freud's Axiom

Sigmund Freud's axiom about dreaming is that dreaming is a wish fulfilled. This implies that all people are neurotic. Furthermore, Freud stated that dreams are not real, and they're just a replacement for reality.

The dream's content can be divided into two segments which are the manifest and latent. The manifest part contains what is the real content. While the latent part is the hallucinatory aspect to the vision. The content that is manifest has been created by processing information. The hidden contents are desires as well as other types of hallucination.

There are four mechanisms that keep the dream from being revealed. These are decryption, displacement of the dream, transference and disguise. The first one is displacement. This occurs when a dreamer uses elements of their dream for similar elements in dream-thoughts. It is a result of the weak control of the sleep brain.
